It took only 69 seconds for Fabricio Werdum to immortalize his legacy in the sport of MMA - Mixed Martial Arts. In 69 seconds Fabricio, known to his fans by the given nickname of "Via Cavalo" had beaten the unbeatable; he had tapped out Fedor. Sixty nine seconds to glory, sixty nine seconds to fame and fortune, but a life time of blood, sweet and tears to get the opportunity to show the world who Fabricio Werdum is.
Werdum was born in Porto Alegre, Brazil in 1977. He was introduced to the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu after getting into a fight with his girlfriends ex-boyfriend and being choked unconscious in a triangle choke. The young teenage Fabricio joined the Winner-Behring Jiu Jitsu academy shortly after the incident. Werdum was somewhat of a prodigy when it came to BJJ, which was shown in 2000 when he when the as a blue belt. Fabricio would go on to win the purple, brown and black belt divisions over the next three years, cementing himself as a Jiu Jitsu phenom.
At the young age of 17 Werdum moved to Spain to live with his mom and completed much of his training in the European Country. He had set up a gym in Madrid at the stadium of Vicente Calderon in the early 2000 and was training with only white and blue belts on his way to winning many of his Jiu Jitsu World Titles. Fabricio had set up several affiliates through out Spain in Albacete and Saragoca. Fabricio's BJJ credentials had awarded him an invite to the ADCC (Abu Dhabi Combat Club), were the best grapplers in the world would compete in submission wrestling competition.
Fabricio placed in his first two appearances and then would go on to win the heavyweight division in 2007, and 2009.
While conquering the world of BJJ, Fabricio had also plied his trade of Jiu Jitsu in the sport of MMA. By 2004, Fabricio had compiled a 4-0 record with all of his fights against named opponents including future UFC heavyweight contender Gabriel Gonzaga. Fabricio would then go on fight in the prestigious Pride Fighting Championships. Pride FC was the very organization where his future opponent Fedor had made his name known by going undefeated in 17 bouts and winning the Pride Heavy weight title. Fabricio would go on to submit several opponents in Pride FC including future Strikeforce and K1 champion Alistair Overeem.
After the demise of Pride, Fabricio found himself fighting for the UFC. Fabricio had mixed results in the Ultimate Fighting Championship going 2-2, and seeing his release from the company after a brutal knock out loss to UFC newcomer Junior Dos Santos.
Many had written Fabricio off after the loss to Dos Santos, but he would get the opportunity to redeem himself against some of the best heavyweights in the Strikeforce organization.
By this time Fabricio was working with former Chute Boxe Professor Rafael Cordeiro and was greatly improving his Muay Thai skills. Fabricio made his Strikeforce debut against tough striker Mike Kyle. The fight was over in the first few minutes with Fabricio emerging victorious by guillotine choke. Fabricio's next fight would be against the Sasquatch sized and top contender Antonio Silva. The fight was a close affair, but Fabricio was able to show off his much improved clinch work as well as get the fight to the mat on several occasion earning him the decision. This win would set up a bout with the aforementioned Fedor Emelianenko. Fedor had been ruled the heavyweight division for a decade and his only loss was due to a technicality in the early days of the sport. No one had given Werdum a chance but all he would need is 69 seconds to prove them wrong.
