Leaving your ego at the door

“more the knowledge, lesser the ego. More the ego, lesser the knowledge.”

Too often individuals misidentify self-confidence for egotistical behavior and vice versa. Self-confidence is backed with knowledge, proper reasoning and experience. While on the other hand egotistical behavior is backed with well...stubbornness and sometimes ignorance.

Athlete, businessperson, student etc we all fall victim to this behavior because we are only human. When first entering a gym/dojo it is very important to leave your ego at the door. There’s a reason that coaches say this to their students. I have been told this on numerous occasions and it takes a little while to get a grasp of that concept. Just because you learned a technique on Youtube doesn’t make you an expert in Jiu Jitsu and you should always listen to the professor.

By allowing your ego to get in the way of your martial arts training you are giving yourself a false sense of confidence. You may miss out on some important technique that would win you a fight or a match.

Ego is a major issue in most gyms, it's hard to control some athletes who believe they are gods gift to man. I find when you put them in the ring with someone that they think they are better than, but who has more knowledge and experience it quickly humbles them!

Your ego has no place in the gym. As a gym owner, I have no problem enforcing this rule to ensure everyone has a great time, but also learns respect and control. On my wall I have printed the price of having an ego of bad attitude. Have a problem with swearing? Well every swear costs you $1. Problem with putting people down? That'll cost you about $4. The list goes on. All the money goes into a jar which is later donated to a charity, but it also keeps people i check.
