Bellator returns for its eighth season, and this one promises to be the biggest and the best. How so? Well for starters this will be the first event broadcast on Spike Tv. Spike Tv was the home of the UFC for quite and some time, and will give Bellator a chance to reach a much broader audience. Also there have been quite a few big signings that are going to making there Bellator debuts, such as Muhammed Lawal, and Renato Sobral. And finally the backlog of finding tournament winners for the champions to face seems to be finished.
The first event takes place in Irvine California, and is packed with great match ups including two title fights. On the preliminary card two of the tournaments light heavy weight tournament semi finals are taking place. In the tournaments opening bout, former MFC light heavy weight champion Emanuel Newton takes on Bulgarian import Atanas Djambazov. Atanas brings an impressive record of 17-2, but no who has he fought? That is the question. Newton brings in a well rounded style with strong wrestling skills. Atanas is an unknown, who is looking to change that perception.
The safe bet is Newton by unanimous decision.
In the other light heavy weight tournament bout on the undercard, UFC and TUF veteran Seth Petruzelli takes on Bellator fighter Jacob Noe. Seth went 0-4 in the UFC which shows he cant handle top competition. But does posses a well rounded skill set as well as KO power. Is Jacob top competition?
He is young, athletic and has something to prove. This one could be a close bout, but im going to go with the Silverback by 2nd round TKO.
In the first Bellator bout aired on Spike Tv, featherweight tournament winner Patricio "Pitbull" Freire takes on 145 pound champion Pat Curran. Both fighters have had to deal with injury's as of late and have taken quite some off from the cage. Now healed up, I expect the fireworks to explode. Both of these fighters are studs, and could easily compete in the UFCs featherweight division. Freire has a solid stand up and jiu jitsu game, and was able to control the larger Daniel Straus in the season 4 final. If Pat had an advantage it would be in his size and wrestling, but im going to go with the pitbull for this one, as he was able to control the larger Strauss in his last bout.
Renato Sobral makes his Bellator debut against a fairly unknown Russian fighter named Mikhail Zayats. Sobral has only fought twice in the last three years, which makes me question if he wants to be doing it or not. But he does have the skill set to take down and submit the Russian fighter. Mikahail was out pointing a game Vinny Magalhaes, before he was caught with a kick in a previous fight. Im going to go with the upset and saw Zayats takes this one with a round one TKO.
In the final bout of the evening, challenger and former Olympic athlete Rick Hawn takes on the undefeated champion in Michael Chandler. This fight is one of those ones that gets you excited about. Both guys are amazing athletes, both have solid bases in grappling(wrestling, Judo), and both of developed solid stand up with KO power. We could get another Chandler vs Alvarez with this fight. So hard to call a winner in this fight, i think i would be tossing a coin on this one.
